week 1 planet

Thinking about our impact on the plant could vary from person to person however, to a business this tends to be sustainability as the business must create new and upcoming pieces within the fashion world that consumers would purchase. one company that practises sustainability well is Levi’s.

Levi’s is known for their long-lasting denim products ranging from jeans to hats. The brand has recently dived into sustainability by reusing previously made products into new designs. This is sustainable as they are not creating new materials and reusing previously made ones. This cuts down on the amount of energy needed to create the fabric. (Levi’s, 2021)

The choses made by brands to be sustainable are so important for our planet as there are estimated 80-150 billion garments made each year. This has caused 10% of the greenhouse gasses that are affecting the planet. Yet with all this consumerism nearly 60% of those newly made garments will end up in landfills within three years of being made. (Wicker, 2020)

There are many ways we can sustainably consume fashion. From the consumers point they can buy less fast fashion from retailers that do not sustainably produce such as Primark and Victoria secret and instead can purchase garments from thrift shops that are now going to be reused. Another way that the consumer can be sustainable is up cycling where they remake the clothes to fit the style and size they would like. Companies can also be more sustainable by reusing older seasons of clothes that did not sell and remaking them into new designs and garments. They can also go through the entire assembly line of work and rethink each part to be more sustainable.

One company which have thought more deeply into sustainability is M&S their own range of clothing has recently re-planed their original strategy which they created in 2007 and are trying to get to net zero. They have even given themselves a timeframe to complete this goal by 2040 which is a realistic timeframe to get the entire line from the farms to on the shelves sustainable. This is in line with the UN’ race to zero campaign. (M&S, 2022)

The UN’s zero campaign is built upon the concept that business and people can grow by still being healthy and sustainable. they have set a timeframe of 2050 and hope to complete the goal of being sustainable earlier. They are led by climate action by climate champions in which many businesses follow.

As the world changes the fashion industry must change with it in order to have a safe and healthy place for everyone to live and with hard work and recognition by big brand the planet should be able to thrive. (Unfccc.int, 2021)
